Mm is for Moosetache!

We learned letter Mm today.  We focused on the sound and name of our new letter friend.  We sang about Marvin the Monkey and discovered lots of words begin with  Mm.  The most fun came from reading the book Moosetache!  We then had a chance to make a moose headband and get a mustache(moosetache)
We loved the funny book, Moosetache!
 Don't we look MARVELOUS?!

Chicka, Chicka, Boom Boom!

We ended our overview of the alphabet with Chicka Chicka Boom Boom fun today!  The story is about all of the letters of the alphabet that come out to play.  We have had a great time playing with the letters of the alphabet. Now we are ready to begin our units of individual letters as we learn each letter sound and then begin to blend those sounds together to read and write words!
We made Chicka Chicka Boom Boom hats!
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Boys!
 Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Girls!

We also made Alphabet Soup! (colored milk, bananas and alphabet cereal)
First we voted on the color of soup we wanted. We voted to mix blue and red to make PURPLE soup!

We colored some milk red.
and some milk blue.
Then we poured them together to make purple!
Purple soup looks yummy!
We added bananas!  Doesn't it look delicious?
Then we each added alphabet cereal to make ALPHABET SOUP!
 Is it really good?
Learning in Kindergarten is always exciting!

Rebecca Read-a-Lot Teaches Us Her Reading Secrets!

We met Rebecca-Read-a-Lot  this week!  She is a puppet friend that teaches us the secrets to being a good reader.  We'll share her secrets with you! Sh-h-h-h!
Rebecca  says:  First you look at the pictures and see if you can tell what the story will be about.
Then, you get your finger ready to point to the words.
Next you get your mouth ready to sound out the words.
Finally, you stretch out the letter sounds to hear the word.

She  has a  purse with special items that help us remember!
Lizzie tries on Rebecca's  glasses to help us to remember to LOOK at the pictures.
Next we get our finger ready to POINT to the words or "TRACK" the words.
We have to remember to get our MOUTHS READY to read by looking at the letters in the word.
Finally, we will learn to S-T-R-E-T-C-H out sounds to read words.
Today we began to work on our READING STAMINA!
'
We learned that STAMINA means building up strength, sort of like building up muscles.
We will see if we can increase the time that we are engaged in reading independently.
Today we read independently for ONE minute!
Learning to read is pretty cool!
Jon showed us how he practiced  reading at home by writing a sentence with his sight words.
READING ROCKS!

When I Grow Up!

This week we have learned about our great community of Lockhart and the jobs of many people that help us.  We now know what we want to be when we grow up!

I want to be:
Jayden: a doctor because doctors help people get
            better.
Emy: a vet so I can help people take care of their
       animals.
Kaylee:a doctor so I can help people feel better.
Junior: a fireman so I can put fires out and get a
           fire dog.
Jon: a monster truck driver cause I always want to be.
Joseph J.: a cop so I take people to jail when they are a
            grownup  and they be bad.
Audrina: a doctor so I can put a band aid on people.
Esther: a doctor like my mama. She pokes people on
            the leg.
Isaac:an astronaut so I can go see the moon and look
         down on earth.
Jace:a race car driver cause I dreamed about that.
Leandra:a vet to help.
Kryslyn: a vet to take care of all the animals that are
             not wild.
Analisa: an animal doctor so I can help the animals feel
            better.
Sashya: a food cooker to cook birthday cakes.
CJ:a veterinarian because I want to take care of
       animals.
Lizzie:a veterinarian because they take care of animals
and I think that is really important.
Cash: A policeman.
Zander: an astronaut to get on the earth. That earth that has those  little holes on it

Our community will be in great hands in the future!

We Filled our Marble Jar! Hooray!

We have been working very hard to fill our marble jar!  Each time our class, as a whole, does something really well we get to put marbles in the jar!  Yesterday it reached the top as we were all working very quietly during "brain work" time.  Today we voted on our celebration/reward.  We voted between POPsicles, POPcorn and POPping our shoes off to go barefoot all day! POPPING our shoes off received the most votes!

This is going to be fun!
It's fun to be barefoot at school!
Our barefooted alphabet train!
Centers in our bare feet is extra fun!
 Snacking in our barefeet
Going barefoot is the best!
Filling up our marble jar is even BETTER!
Hooray for us!

Zero the Hero Comes Again!

Today was the 20th day of Kindergarten!  Zero the Hero came to visit us again.  This time he gave us 2 zeros!  Some of us have figured out that he will come again in another 10 days!
We have had a busy 20 days of Kindergarten! We are learning about letters so that we can learn to read and write.  We also have learned four sight words as well as color words. In Math we have worked on shapes, colors, sorting and classifying and now we are learning about positional words. We have also worked very hard at rules and routines to make Carver a fun, safe place to be. We are building a great foundation  for a fantastic Kindergarten year!

Don't Forget to Come to Open House, Tuesday Sept. 24th!

We will be having Open House/Back to School Night at Carver tomorrow night!  We hope you can visit.  Please meet in the cafeteria for a short meeting with Ms. Nixon, our principal, at 5pm.  Children and families will then be able to visit the classroom and tour our school from 5:30-6:30! The Book Fair will also be open at that time!

Sorting Fun!

Kindergarten math is a year of exploration and discovery of numbers. In math this week we have been sorting and classifying. Sorting and classifying objects not only teaches
children about attributes and relationships, but also promotes thinking logically and applying rules.

We learned to sort by color
                                       and shape.

Sorting pom poms are cool.  Thanks Jon, for bringing these!
We can sort sea shells by size.
 Sorting another "treasure collection"!

Sorting a hair accessory collection by shape
Sorting by color and shape
Sorting collections with our friends is fun!

By learning to follow rules  like " why certain objects belong in certain groups" we are  grasping
concepts that form a basis for understanding mathematical functions.  Learning MATH is fun!

Thanks to all who brought wonderful items for us to add to our collections!

Rhyming Rocks with Fox in Sox!

We had fun with rhyming words today as we became fox in socks after reading the Dr. Seuss book, Fox in Socks!    We each made our own fox hat. After we rhymed words with Mrs. Daily we were able to take off our shoes!  It was fun to be a fox in socks! Research shows that children who can understand about rhyming words have a head start in learning to read and, even more, to spell.
We think RHYMING ROCKS!
