We Love R.I.F.!

RIF or Reading is Fundamental is the largest children’s literacy non-profit organization in the United States.  Citizens of Lockhart promote this program by delivering free books to children to prepare and motivate them to read.  Their hope is to inspire children to be lifelong readers!
We were so excited to choose a book from the RIF ladies!
We couldn't wait to read our books.
We remembered Rebecca Read-a-Lot's  secret as we read our books.
We looked at the pictures to see what was going to happen in our book. We also found some of our sight words in our books!
We were so excited about our new books that we were able to build our reading stamina to NINE minutes today!  That is awesome!
Thank you RIF sponsors!  WE love our books!

Pumpkin Time!

We had a great time carving our pumpkin today!
First we read the book "Pumpkin Heads" and voted on the face we wanted our pumpkin to have.

Then we had to clean out our pumpkin. It was gooey and slimy, but it was fun!

Then Mrs. Daily carved it and we put a candle inside to light it up.
We are proud of our pumpkin!

We also made fun pumpkin hats.
Perfect Pumpkins
We are so excited that Halloween is only two days away!

Silly Socks for Ss!

We had fun showing off our silly socks for Ss!
We loved being silly in our socks today!

Miss Spider Arrives for Letter Ss!

We were surprised to see a spider crawling on our ceiling this morning when we came to school!  Of course, we soon found out that it was Miss Spider, a friendly book character. Miss Spider came to help us learn the letter Ss!

We loved hearing the story about Miss Spider. She was a nice spider that wanted to have a tea party with friends. All of the insects were frightened by the thought of having tea with a spider and ran away!  Finally, after Miss Spider helped a very tired and wet moth, the insects discovered that Miss Spider really was a friend!

We each made our very own sight word spider to help us practice our sight words.

We read our sight words to Mrs. Daily.
  Spiders, spiders everywhere!
We jumped for joy when we heard that we would be having a tea party with Miss Spider on Halloween!
We can't wait until Thursday!

Remember that we will be having our PE Halloween musical on Thursday, Oct. 31 from 10-10:45am.  We hope to see you there!

Children may wear their Halloween costumes to school on Thursday!

Aa is for Apple Fun!

Today we read the story " The Star in the Apple". It was about a little boy that was looking for a little red house, with a chimney on top, with no windows and no doors. He discovered that it was an apple that he was looking for.  When his mom sliced the apple in half (horizontally) there was a star inside! We then discussed if the story was real or make believe.  We were excited to discover that there really was a star in the apple!
Thanks to the boys and girls that brought an apple(or apples) today!

We loved experimenting with our apples to discover the star inside.

We even created and colored an apple and a star appeared!

We loved eating apple slices and cooking some to make yummy applesauce!!

Learning to Love Reading!

We are so excited about learning to READ!  This week we learned our first vowel, Aa.    We learned that every word has to have a vowel. Vowels are the "glue" that hold a word together.  We can't have a word without a vowel. Now we can read by blending!  Blending or sounding out words  is smoothly ‘hooking the sounds of a word together’ to hear the word. When we can hear that word and identify it,we are READING!  We had fun blending words with our Apples! Reading is  amazing!

We also read two new readers, I Am Ann and Tam in the Garden. These readers include our sight words and some blending words. We are so excited that we can read! We took turns reading to a friend.

Finally, we worked on building our reading stamina (or our "reading brain muscle"). Reading stamina is a child's ability to focus and read independently without being distracted or without distracting others.  Reading stamina is the energy needed to fuel our  reading habits. "If you don't improve your reading stamina, reading becomes frustrating and yields little pleasure and results.” We improved to 5 1/2 minutes today!  Hooray!!
Reading is so fun!
