Texas Public School Week March 3-7

 We have been learning about our great state, TEXAS, this week as we prepare for Texas Public School Week March 3-7.  We hope you visit our campus next week during some of our special activities.

There will be a Book Fair in the Library each day from 7:45-11-15 am and 12:30-3 pm. Book fair will close at 2pm on Friday.

Tuesday, March 4, 2014  Continental Breakfast for Carver Families(free) and Grandparents, too!

Friday, March 7, 2014  Dress in cowboy/cowgirl attire for our "Salute to Texas" musical performance performed in the gym with our PE/Music teachers.  Our performance time is 1:30-2:15pm.  Children may be signed out in the classroom after their performance.

Three Billy Goats Gruff

                                           
We finished up our study of the letter Gg this week by hearing three different storybook versions of the Three Billy Goats Gruff.  We loved hearing the old tale about the three goats and the troll.  Then we all had a turn to become actors and actresses as we did a "live performance" for our class.  We took turns being the characters from the story.  Watch our grand finale, all star cast performance below!

Our Stupendous Store!

What a stupendous store it was!  We were so excited to be able to buy those things that we had been looking at all week long.   We first counted and graphed the amounts of money we had earned.  Then it was time to shop!

Whole Lot of Learning Going On!

We have had a busy week learning new things!  We learned about consonant blends this week. We know that two consonants can "blend" together to make a whole new sound. We have had a great time earning our money and can't wait to spend it in our store tomorrow. We will learn all about budgeting our money tomorrow, too! :) We have also learned to read the number words one, two, three, four and five. We played a fun number game called FIVE ALIVE. We had to think quick and read the number words.  We then put ourselves into groups according to the number word shown. It was so much fun we didn't even know how fast we were learning to read those number words!  We also learned the importance of taking care of our teeth.  We know that we need our teeth to talk, eat and to look so pretty when we smile!

 Then we read number words to put a crazy toothbrush hat in the right order!

We did a fun experiment this week to help us remember to take care of our teeth.  We put an egg in vinegar, milk, soda and water to see what happens. Just as an egg shell protects what is inside the egg, our tooth covering called enamel protects our teeth.   We discovered that soda stains our teeth and the vinegar (or acid) made our tooth soft and unprotected.  We know that water and milk do not harm our teeth.  We have learned that it is very important to brush, floss and eat healthy foods.

Learning in Kindergarten is tons of fun!

Class Picture Day on Friday, Feb. 21st

Remember that we will be taking individual and class group pictures tomorrow !  If you wish to purchase a group picture, payment must be received by tomorrow. Individual pictures will be sent home for purchase at a later date.

Consonant Blends

We are learning about consonant blends this week. Consonant blends are when two letters put together create one sound. Some common blends are bl, br,cl, cr, fl, gl, pl, sc, sl, sn, sp, and st. We are learning consonant blends to help us become better readers.

On Monday we had fun with the consonant blend st.  We brainstormed words that began with st , had a “stare down” with our friends.......

 and also created a stop sign on which we wrote st - words.

Our most exciting activity this week will be our Stupendous Store!

On Friday, we will be having a Stupendous Store  for the consonant blend “st “ Children will be earning “money”  to spend in our store on Friday!  We are asking  for each child to bring at least one item for our store.  Good store items would be anything that your child has that they are willing to give away…(like having a garage sale!).  Extra Happy Meal toys, old books, stuffed animals, anything…would make good items for our store!  Children may bring more that one item if they would like!  Children may bring these all week!
